Director Jose Luis Garcia Sanchez and writer Rafael Azcona took a different approach to making a historical film by using the conventions of the musical comedy as opposed to the period drama. In the 1970s, Spain and Morocco were in conflict over a section of the Sahara controlled by the former. Instead of marching troops into the territory, the King of Morocco, Hassan II, sent an enormous group of civilians to occupy the land, in a maneuver dubbed THE GREEN MARCH. The group was led by a troupe of performers, and was dominated by a carnivalesque spirit. The Spanish soldiers, amazed, could do nothing but join in the fun. THE GREEN MARCH has a unique tone for a historical film, especially considering that it chronicles an event that many saw as the end of Francoism and the colonial impulse in Spain.
