In turn-of-the-century Mexico, young Carmen`s mother wants to her marry Rodrigo, who is rich, foolish, and old. Carmen`s heart lies with Fernando. In an aid to help the young lovers, Don Pancho poses as Fernando`s godfather in order to get Rodrigo drunk and involve him in a duel so that Rodrigo will run in fear--thus looking foolish and improving Carmen`s mother`s opinion of Fernando.
